Wednesday, December 16, 1970 FOLLOWING the one-day strike on December 8, the great task now before the working-class move- ment is to force the trade union leaders to mobilize the full force of the unions' membership in a gen.

eral strike to force the Tory gov- ernment to resign. January 12 could be made the beginning of this mobilization.

To force the union leaders into this fight is a political struggle, against the politics of reformism and Stalinism.

The reformists and Stalinists are being helped at every turn by the revisionists 'state capitalist' International of the Socialism group. The witch-hunters of the capitalist ress find it convenient to call this group Trotskyist'. It is nothing of the sort: it is opposed to Trotskyism, and its policies are the opposite of the policies of Social- ist Labour League. They dismiss as impossible a fight of the mass reformist and organization and trade union look forward to 'their turn' after reaction, in the shape of the new laws, has triumphed. Sectarianism In this way opportunism turns easily into sectarianism. very The consequences of the 'state capitalists' policy would be to put the working class at grave risk of the continuation in office of the Tory government with the laws passed, for the temporary advantage they from expect ineffectual protests. The more we look at the policies of the 'state capitalists', the more criminal they obviously are. "Socialist Worker' reports its own 'industrial conference' with summaries of the speeches made by IS spokesmen Roger, Rose.

Rosewell well and Jim Higgins. repeats that 'rank-and-file work- ers will have to do the job, but goes further: 'He said that the Liaison Com- mittee for the Defence of Trade Unions had issued the call for the December 8 strike, but it was bureaucratic organization. He advocates the very left- 'Councils Action' sounding of instead of a political fight within the unions, but he wants to hand over these bodies to the Stalin- ists! not the And this is worst According to 'Socialist Worker': 'He ended by warning that the government and bosses would not rush to use the new laws.

They would wait to choose their time and attack a weak section of workers' This misses the point entirely and creates dangerous illusions.

Once the basic law is through, the government will use it, together with all sorts of existing powers for emergency situations, to make illegal major strike actions and to intimidate milit- ants. that these leaders 'cannot sell out the members completely. On another page of the same issue, 'Socialist Worker' head- lines a historical article by Mr Sabby Sagall, 1926: magnificent solidarity of the rank and file was betrayed by TUC'. Perhaps his friend Higgins will explain to him that they were not 'com- pletely' betrayed! Simplified However there is more than meets the eye to Sagall's article. His picture of a General Strike betrayed by a right-wing TUC General Council is the over- simplified rubbish to be found in Stalinist publication since any 1926. The role played by Stalinism itself in the 1926 strike is very deliberately completely excluded.

The first reason for this is the abject capitulation of 'Inter- national Socialism' to the Stalin- ists in the present struggle.

Its deeper roots lie in the middle-class and anti-theoretical character of this revisionist group. The Trotskyist movement is securely founded on the fight for Marxist principles and for the independence of the Marxist party, taken up by Trotsky from 1924 onwards against Stalin. Where did this opportunist From line come from? the Stalin-Zinoviev formulation that in Britain the socialist revolution might 'not through the come narrow gateway of the Commun- ist Party, but through the broad gateway of the trade unions!

How was it justified to the powerful Minority Movement? By painting as of some sort revolutionaries the fake lefts (Swales Purcell, Hicks) on the General Council, because they were enthusiasts for the 'Anglo- Russian Trade Union Commit- tee' Stalinism Between August 1925 and May 1, 1926, the Communist Party was converted into instru- an ment of this Stalinist policy, so that independent revolu- no tionary struggle was taken up General Council against the traitors. This, the question of building the independent revolu- tionary party, was and still is fundamental question. The the revision of Marxism this on question was what ensured the defeat of the 1926 strike.

The fact that Sagall and the editors of 'Socialist Worker' pub- lished his article in such a way as to completely obscure Stalin- ism's role is the surest indica- tion that they are determined enemies of Marxism, determined to cut off the working class. from its Marxist theoretical and poli- tical beritage.... One of the many positive aspects of the present situation is that it forces the position of these revisionists completely into the open.
